Royal attire goes modern

Sarah Jane Dias, the model and the actress wanted a dress for a film festival in New York. Who else would have been a better choice than India’s gem of a designer – Rocky S.

Sarah had just a few things in her head for the dress. Something Indian, gilded and last but not the least, a halter neckline to show off her back. It sounded pretty easy, but as Rocky S explained that beneath the surface he had a lot of things floating around.

Once again Rocky chooses Jaipur as his muse. But he has his reasons. Gilded works, classy, Indian ensemble sounds very elaborate and Jaipur of course has so much to offer that it certainly can be an inspiration for more than one dress.

The first stop was a surprise by Shibani Dandekar for Rocky S. And the surprise was a visit to royalty, Princess Dia Kumari. Her Royal Highness met them at the City Palace Jaipur.

Every piece of architecture, the sculptures, the photos and of course the dresses colluded to inspire. Rocky S was like a kid in candy land who wanted to grab it all, who would blame him for that!

Rocky S was in awe of the royalty and Her Highness was generous to show Rocky and Shibani her wedding dress. Gilded in work done in pure silver, weighing at about 20 kilos and over a 100 years the dress still stood tall. While style never goes out of fashion, royalty defined fashion and it still does.  Then she showed them her traditional dress for Holi. It was Bandhani cloth that looked exquisite. The first stop was a surprise by Shibani Dandekar for Rocky S. And the surprise was a visit to royalty, Princess Dia Kumari. Rocky S knew the things he had to look for in the city. Next stop was for bandhani sari. They stopped at a local market where they saw exquisite bandhani saris. The one that caught Rocky’s eye was a maroon with a pattern in royal blue all over. The fabric was done and the next step was the accessories. The traditional jewellery worn by the people of Rajasthan, including the royals is Jadau necklace. The Kundan jewellery works were really spectacular and the whole shop was glazed in their beauty. A fine kundan necklace was added to the Style and The City treasure chest.

To add to the ensemble, Rocky took Shibani to the world of hand woven Gotta Patti embroidery.Gota Patti on ChiffonThis is done by many artisans simultaneously on the same piece of fabric and one piece takes days! The sheer amount of hard work and patience only added to the brilliance and precision of the artistry. A length of the Gotta Patti was in the Style and The City treasure chest.

The end result was a spectacular maroon ensemble with a royal blue pattern and Gotta Patti border. Though the gilded part of the initial brief wasn’t really embodied into the final outfit but Rocky S had incorporated every inspiration from Jaipur into it.

Sarah Jane Dias was in awe of the dress and we can’t blame her for that. For today the heady mix of royalty, inspiration and jewellery form Jaipur was something to last as a memory and for Sarah as a dress.

For tomorrow holds another day, another muse and a different celeb.
